Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at an absolutely incredible school. Positivity and hope for our students' futures run amok, even in the face of adversity. It's a high needs area: our school is 95% free and reduced lunch, 90% minority, and 85% English language learners. My classroom reflects these demographics in such a beautiful way.
We are unified, not uniform.
We're a diverse group and together we spend the day learning about fifth grade topics, and through interactions with each other, we learn about the world around us.
My Project
90% of the students in my classroom are multilingual learners. They are incredible people who are excited to learn about the world around them and to grow as readers. They often do this through their home language and through English. Each day, students work on adding content knowledge to what they already know, and on being able to express that learning in both their home language and in English.
Language levels shouldn't inhibit content learning.
I have many incredibly hardworking, inquisitive, Spanish speaking students who want to learn about the world around them. If the only books I have to offer these students are in English, the amount of new learning they can access is limited. If I only offer students English books at their English language level, the content is simplified. These books might support students language development, but they don't support their content development. In order for students to get both grade level content and to grow in English proficiency, students need high interest Spanish Non-Fiction books. With Non-Fiction books in Spanish in my classroom, I can not only validate and emphasize the importance of being multilingual, but students can grow their knowledge about the world around them.
