Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In a 21st Century World, communication is probably the most important skill that a person can develop and refine. My students are 8th graders who have not had true access to a high level vocabulary and because of that, their writing skills are not quite at grade level.
My students are really creative and outgoing students.
They have minds that are bursting with an inquisitive energy like nothing I have ever seen. My 8th graders attend an international 6-12 school that is really trying to push not only their academics but the idea of developing the whole student - the whole child.
My Project
I am putting a very heavy emphasis on writing skills this year. This is the primary area where my kids are truly struggling. One of the root causes of their struggles comes from their lack of a word bank to pull from in their writing. They are often repetitive and use basic words such as "bad", "good", "nice", etc... These are words they should have stopped using in fifth grade - never mind eighth!
We will be exploring so much more than Language Arts content in class this year and being strong communicators and having a wealthy vocabulary will enable them to engage in higher level, challenging conversations about our world.
My students have already come so far this year in terms of changing their attitudes towards their learning.
So many of my kids have given up on themselves because of the struggles that they have in reading and writing. Through simply teaching my kids that they have the ability, the knowledge, and the power to do well in school, this can year can end up being truly life-changing for them. Part of giving them that power comes from instilling within them the confidence in their writing skills.
