My Students

Harry K. Wong once said, "Students want a safe, predictable, and nurturing environment----one that is consistent." I am a Reading Intervention teacher. At this time, I service 26 students for Reading support. This number varies since group participants are expected to cycle in and out of the the reading groups. My role is to meet with students, provide consistent interventions with fidelity, so they can feel successful in the classroom environment. All of these learners are working 1-2 years below grade level. The younger students , grades K-2, may also have difficulty with phonics. This hinders their ability to move forward as a reader. With quality, consistent interventions at the lower level, we hope to have learners grow before they reach grade 3. Some students in grades 3-5 struggle with fluency and comprehension. These students also need consistent interventions to move forward.

Research shows that if a learner is not reading on grade level by 4th grade, the gap will widen and these learners are four times more likely to drop out of high school.

These learners come from low income backgrounds. Most children take care of younger siblings while their parents work. Sometimes, there is limited support at home.

My Project

As struggling readers, students often become discouraged. Interest levels are limited and opportunities may not always be available. With a mobile library in my classroom, students have accessibility to more books of various genres. Often students come to me, asking if I have a book that may help them with a project. This will give them the option to look through a variety of resources. I once had a first grader who did not want to come to reading intervention. I knew he liked sharks. I was able to find a non-fiction text about sharks which was the perfect opportunity to break the ice.

Everyone is a reader, some just haven't found their favorite book yet!

I want my students to be excited about reading. Perhaps they find a favorite character or author and they want to explore books in a series. Of course students can access books on line, but there's nothing like having a book in your hands. The colorful pictures and sharp, crisp print can be engaging for children. Turning pages and being able to flip through a text can spark interest for any child!
