This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

With several years of budget cuts, many of our science supplies have been depleted. Chemicals have been used up and lab ware has been broken without being replaced.

The students of our California public school are predominantly low income.

Over 75% of them are on free or reduced lunch. They love science, though! Our state test scores in science have been leading all the other middle schools in the district for several years in a row.

My Project

This project will help replenish used chemicals, goggles, safety gloves, and pH indicator papers used in one of the students' most favorite labs - acids and bases. The pH papers will be used by the students, as they test the pH of several common solutions. The sulfuric acid will be used by the teacher to demonstrate the dehydration of sugar - an exciting demonstration where granulated sugar turns to a rising column of steaming black carbon through its reaction with the acid. It will also be used in a chemical safety demonstration and electrolysis of water experiment.

Science is a visual and hands-on experience.

With less materials to work with, hands-on activities become demos performed by the teacher. Doing so takes away from their excitement and experience. These students need replacements for their depleted supplies!
