Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Class, who can help summarize the water cycle for me?"
Student raises hand.
"Yes, Johnny?"
"I can't find my pencil...."
Another student raises hand.
"Yes, Susie?"
"My pencil broke...."
Help!!
My students attend a school in a high poverty (96% low income) inner city school.
They face many financial challenges outside of the school building so our goal is to make their lives easier once they walk in. Buying school supplies is often managed by the teachers and administration because of the population we deal with. As the years continue, these supplies can be quite costly. My students are eager learners who want to get to work right away! They are polite, respectful, friendly, and kind. They ask countless questions to deepen their understanding and amaze me every day!
My Project
Basic supplies, although not very glamorous or exciting, are absolute necessities and are the foundation to a well run classroom. Ask any teacher and they will explain how frustrating it is to begin work and have to stop because students do not have appropriate supplies. A huge pet peeve of mine is when I want to get started, and so does the majority of my class, but a student suddenly can't find a pencil or needs a pencil sharpened. In a previous year I had pencil boxes donated to my classroom and it was absolute bliss!! I ensured each pencil box was fully stocked and was tucked neatly in their desk. With a pencil sharpener that actually works, we can stop wasting precious minutes and get to work!!
My students come from a high poverty neighborhood and often are not given the opportunity to go back to school shopping for basic supplies. I enjoy buying supplies for my students but this become a significant financial burden over the years.
They always say it's the little things that really count and this is so true.
Pencils are a basic need and without them there are many interruptions during the day. Something as simple as a pencil box and pencil sharpener can help streamline our day and really keep us focused on the task at hand.
