Could you imagine going to the store and not being able to figure out the right amount of money to give the clerk? It is imperative for children to master this skill in the primary grades. This skill is not only required to successfully participate in state tests, but also in the real world!
Our school is located in a low-income area where 100% of the students receive free or reduced price lunch.
In addition, this is only our second year in existence in a school with limited resources. My students are full of life and love to learn! They are especially interested in money!
My Project
In order to increase my students' skills with counting money, I often have them use objects around the classroom such as whiteboard erasers and pencils to "play store". However, we are in dire need of resources that can really spark imagination and interest! We are requesting a variety of materials and manipulatives that will help us in our quest to increase our money skills. The materials that we have chosen include play money, a candy shop game, at your seat math games, and math bingo games. Using these materials gives my students an opportunity to practice their skills while having fun!
We would be so appreciative to receive the materials we have requested.
As a teacher it is important to present instruction to students in a way that is memorable and creates an enduring understanding. What better way to do that than through creative play!
