I teach a group of 23 fantastic first grade students in the wonderful state of South Carolina. I have been teaching now for six years and yet I don't see an end in sight when it comes to resources I need on a daily basis to provide these students with the best education possible.
In the Spring, we always begin to look at what we've accomplished so far this school year and begin to plan for future goals (2nd grade and lifetime!) With this, we begin our unit on Community Helpers. This unit not only provides students with an appreciation for our community and what it takes to run, but also a first look at their long term future goals. I do my best to describe to the students all the various jobs that people hold within our community and how one day, they too will contribute to a community as a responsible citizen. With many working parents and limited funds for trips, it is difficult for these students to experience first hand what different jobs entail.
We are in need of a set of posters that clearly depict working people at various professions. By using these photographs, students will be able to see tools, uniforms, and tasks required for each position. We need a set of informational books on their level so they can learn even more details about the jobs that allow our community to exist each day. And to make this unit most successful for the children, we need a set of costumes for the dramatic play center. What better way for students to experiences different jobs while staying in our classroom!!
By funding this project, you will be making a difference in the lives of these students. You will be providing them with opportunities to begin thinking about the future. Their future...Our future...
What was your first response when someone asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"
