This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am a new teacher from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. I teach at a school with children from very poor socioeconomic backgrounds. My students come to my classroom with very little background information. So, I try to build this background information through books, videos, computer resources, and field trips as much as I possibly can. I also try to find creative ways to teach my students so that school is a fun and exciting place for them to be.
This summer I have gone to a couple math workshops that had outstanding lesson ideas to go with fun creative picture books my first graders next year would absolutely love! Children's books are a fantastic resource for introducing and extending mathematical ideas and also providing them with essential real world examples. I have taught with math books before, and the students love them! Soon they learn to recognize math books and they will even shout out ?there's math in this book!? Unfortunately I do not have a lot of them in my school to use. I am asking for about twenty books, which I discovered at various workshops, that would allow me to introduce and reinforce a variety of math concepts from geometry to addition and subtraction.
