Mr. Kotter, I am not.
But I am thankful to not teach the Sweathogs. I teach elementary art to a high-poverty urban school in Colorado. My students range in age from 5 - 12 years old and are some of the funniest, most genuine kids I've ever had the privilege to teach. Our school is incredibly diverse and houses students from over 60 different countries. We have a wonderful, positive environment here and always have fun in art!
Here's the deal: after years going without a kiln, we finally got the district to purchase one for our site. Hooray! A kiln! It was a HUGE celebration for us. However, because we went for so long without a kiln, our ceramic program is pretty rinky-dink right now and we're trying to build it up so we can have the same level of supplies as other schools in the district.
A slab roller would REALLY help out our ceramics program. Because I teach such young students, many simply do not have the strength to roll out clay into flat pieces, and a slab roller makes that simple and easy.
Seriously, I am sure if you're reading this, you've looked through some other proposals, and I do want to convince you that my students would make the most of it. They are SO EXCITED to finally be able to do clay, and I really want to make their ceramics experiences successful. These are kids who come from homes where their parents work two or three jobs to make ends meet, and older siblings do all the housework. We have kids who live in cars and kids whose only food comes from the free/reduced meals at school. You better believe that a good ceramics program DOES make a difference to these kids -- you should have seen the looks on their faces when I told them they could make CUPS or SCULPTURES and actually get to take them home!
If you become a donor, I'd love to take a picture of those joyful faces and send it along to you -- I know it's what makes this job worth it to me.
