This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come mostly from low-income, single-parent households. Some of these households have more than one family living under one roof. Because of these disadvantages, I try to make sure each student takes advantage of the knowledge they gain from each and everyday of class. A lot of the students I teach are below grade level and are struggling readers. It causes issues in the classroom when you have twenty-five percent of the class on grade level and the other seventy-five percent below.
My Project
Last year our school district/community suffered a tremendous hardship. The water system completely shut down, making it difficult for residents and the school system to receive adequate water to cook with or drink. People donated water to the school, but that water has since run out. There were a lot of old pipes that had to be replaced. The school's pipes were replaced a couple of weeks before school started.
Students need to have an adequate water and food supply.
Some students' parents supply them with water and a snack daily. However, some do not have the income to support this practice. This project will supply the third grade students with the necessary items to keep for those students that come to school hungry and thirsty. They will be provided with something to eat and drink. We all know students cannot learn or concentrate if they are hungry.
