Help me give my students storytelling kits, in order that I may make stories come alive for them. It is thrilling to see their eyes light up with the joy of discovery!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Hugs and high-fives between friends in my class are not uncommon. Every day, encouraging words are spoken. What makes this classroom unique is the fact that all 8 learners have special needs. We are an inclusion class, so students spend half their day with general ed same-age, developmentally appropriate peers. Our learners are curious, rambunctious, and ready to have fun. They know, however, the following dictum: First work, then play. And the playtime gives me opportunities to pose simple questions about letters and numbers, to develop language, and to create problem-solving scenarios. This positive climate is built in a Baltimore City Title I school.
My Project
Elijah, a 4 y.o. with autism, has already begun to dash into other classrooms to play with a nearby Chicka-Chicka-Boom-Boom tree. I just know I'll be able to stimulate the childrens' love for learning with these storytelling kits I'm anxious to provide. My learners are sweet, and silly, and eager. Also, it will help prevent eloping (chuckle) if we already have the supplies our kids are driven to explore. They really are great kids - dynamos of energy - and they crave interesting, fun projects. Today, for instance, we made applesauce, then reviewed the ingredients and steps with an art project. Their faces were screwed up in concentration as they went to it with gusto. Please help me make this classroom a doorway to magical reading adventures!
