My students need engaging, cooperative, grade level appropriate, language building activities, games, and manipulatives to help them enjoy expanding their reading, writing, and speaking skills.
Getting my student to become excited and engaged in vocabulary activities was difficult, until I found Lakeshore Learning vocabulary games. The problem is that my students only have access to such games that are below their grade level!
My students are 5th and 6th graders who live in Hawaii.
This is an inclusion classroom with 22% of the class identified as special education students. Many of these students are struggling learners, but benefit from our small school environment and innovative teaching techniques.
My Project
With these high interest language and vocabulary games, my students will work with partners and small groups to expand their understanding and use of grade-level appropriate language skills while having fun. During our language arts time, students will have 30 minutes each regular school day to choose one of these games for active learning. While playing, students will be learning about idioms, synonyms, antonyms, prefixes, suffixes, homophones, and other age appropriate language skills.
"The limits of your language are the limits of your world." - Ludwig Wittgenstein.
The students who will be using these educational games will make great gains in their understanding and use of the English language. They will be able to apply what they glean from these fun learning tools to their own reading, writing, and verbal expression.
