My Students

I teach at a high-poverty Title I school in North Carolina, where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.

My students are some of the most well-mannered, creative, and expressive people I know; I want to see them reach their full potential.

My students need to be free to learn in their learning styles, whether it be kinesthetic, visual, auditory, musical, etc. When I meet them on their level and they "get it" that moment is more precious than gold.

My Project

My students will use the balls, cones, jump ropes, hula-hoops, bean bags, and activity mats to play during recess and classroom active play time. It is beneficial to my students so they may use this project to foster a team-building community. We will work together to learn new games and activities. Research has proven that students who are more active throughout the day can retain and apply information much more effectively than their non-active classmates.

Through active play students learn self-awareness, gross-motor skills, conflict resolution, and the importance of following directions.

I want to shift the focus of my classroom culture towards learning through play. Students will have a structured recess time where they will play games together, following agreed-upon rules while still having fun. My students will also have time during the day to choose their physical activity; working together with their classmates.
