My students are driven to find their personal passion! We are in a low-income area where students find their sanctuary at our school. Many of my students end up at our school because a traditional school was not meeting their personalized needs. These students often have gifts that go undiscovered due to the lack of understanding of their needs. I feel that it is important for them to discover what they are passionate about, enabling them to develop college and career goals.
We started out the year without a school library or classroom library. I have been on a mission to create a classroom library full of diverse books where every student can find a book to read and enjoy. I want my students to be excited about reading. In our classroom we read to gain a deeper understanding, increase comprehension, build vocabulary and background knowledge, as well as for pleasure.
Reading is important because it develops the mind!
I want my students to read for a purpose as well as read for pleasure. Having books for them to choose from excites them to read. Our growing library has created a classroom culture where reading is treasured. Students are sharing and recommending books to each other. They are requesting titles for our next book project. I will continue to build a library that represents each and every one of my students.
