I teach in a small community which is continuing to grow. The high school that I teach at has 800 students enrolled. Approximately 20% of those students are low-income and at-risk students. As a teacher, it is my job to provide those students with resources and opportunities to succeed in school, and in life.

Our school district is beginning to cut funds and it is only the beginning of the school year. I ordered 30 novels for the students for this semester, but next semester there will be double the amount of students. I do not have the funds to purchase the books for the other 30 students. Students need these books to better their understanding of British literature and its roots. Through this story, the first epic, students build all of their reading and knowledge of literary Britain. Without this novel, their background knowledge will be minimal. This story is also the basis for the first unit which is used for an online debate and a persuasive essay.

I would greatly appreciate if someone would donate 30 more Beowulf books for the British Literature class I teach. This class is a required class for graduation. Beowulf is such an awesome story in its entirety that it would be a disservice to students if they were not given the opportunity to read it.

Please give students the gift of imagination and literacy by providing them the oldest story recorded, Beowulf.
