Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in an urban school district with students in my classroom who come from very diverse backgrounds. Most of my students come from low income households, with very few books in their home libraries. They have little access to literature, especially literature that is representative of their own diverse cultures.
I would like to teach my students social and emotional skills through books.
My students need an escape from their everyday lives. Many see violence right outside of their own windows. I want them to see that together, we can make in difference in the world.
I want my students to see that reading can take them on adventures, make them laugh, cry and to be a better person!
My Project
These materials will help my students identify with the characters in literature while developing social skills and engage in thoughtful discussion.
These books will help my students learn how to positively build their own communities, develop empathy for others and support their own identities.
They can regain a love for reading which is often lost within the pressures of testing.
My students will strengthen their own reading skills by listening to fluent reading, engaging in meaningful conversations about books, strengthen their comprehension skills all while identifying with the characters in the books whose life experiences are similar to their own.
