My students need a diverse variety of books to reflect their own diversity. The class sets of Strunk and White and The Hobbit will be especially important this year for my seniors.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a diverse group of students at a lower-income school in Austin, TX. Many of my students are first or second generation immigrants who often come from poor families, but have big dreams. I teach students with disabilities as well as gifted and advanced academic students and everything in between.
The education these students receive today will determine their potential for success in the future and so I try to give them the best education possible.
Good books are the key.
My Project
One thing I have learned from watching hundreds of students come through my classroom is that even the most recalcitrant students are actually eager to learn if you find their motivator and activate it. The books that I keep in my classroom are my tools, the keys that I use to activate the motivator switches.
It feels so good to be able to look at a student, pull just the right book off the shelf and say, "Here, I bet you'll like this one." Unfortunately I have a much wider variety of students than classroom books and so I frequently find myself jotting a title or author on a sticky note and saying, "Here, see if they have this at the library."
The easiest way to teach is to inspire students to learn on their own and the way I do that is by connecting them with the right books. Each book on this list is another potential friend to a newly motivated lifelong learner.
