This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Students at my school are in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Although school is a place for learning how to be successful academically, it is not a secret that students are suffering from different issues that goes beyond the classroom. They experience problems at home (domestic violence, divorce, neglect) as well as at school (bullying, self-esteem challenges, behavior concerns such as defiance and lack of respect for adults, anger management, low levels of motivation to succeed). Then there are a few that have depression or suicidal idealizations.
My Project
Students may be discouraged to see a counselor due to the stigma that comes with it and the judgment from peers. As their school counselor, it would be great to have a number of tools and resources that encourages them to want to attend individual and group counseling sessions. Comfortable seating allows a more inviting atmosphere and something different than what they are used to in classrooms. Therapeutic arts/crafts, games and music takes the "boring" out of counseling by catering to their personalities; making it a fun place to learn about themselves and how to cope with their daily challenges.
