My students need structured and unstructured games. Each student has a strength; we work together to find these strengths. WE need LEGO, books and more.
All of the students I work with have some learning or emotional disability. We work in a one on one setting or small group setting (no more than 6 students) learning to cope with mental/emotional barriers in order to be successful in school. My students learn mindfulness and calming strategies for frustration. I use cognitive behavior therapy in order to bring change into students' lives.
I see a change in student behavior and emotional states in only about a year of working with them.
Many of my students have overcome their anxiety over failures or have managed to control their anger at school. My goal is not to eliminate anxiety or anger but to learn to work through it. Everyone, especially children, have a right to feel what they want, but these feelings should not limit their ability to learn and grow.
My Project
The materials I'm requesting will help my students during therapy sessions. Many of my younger students suffer from anxiety, depression, and anger. Most elementary school students cannot convey these feelings very well. The putty and fidgets I'm requesting will help sooth many of my students during episodes of anxiety.
Many of my students focus on only the negative; these items will help them identify their strengths and encourage great ideas.
Through play therapy they are able to express themselves and work through difficulty situations.
Structured games like Mindfulness Matters, Cards for Calm, and Mad Dragon will help my students identify feelings and learn new coping strategies. The Legos, coloring books, and Etch A Sketch will be used when talking about difficult subjects such as bullying, death, and fear. My goal is to help each of my students learn to cope with difficult situations. I greatly appreciate all the support to make this happen. Thank you!
