Our small community does big things when we work together.
I am the School Counselor at an elementary school in Central Indiana.
Our community is small, suburban and rural area, full of families who really love and care about their children and education. We have 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students who are working to become their best selves every day. Our school recently received funding to add another school counselor, so now we have one at each elementary school. This is very exciting and will allow us to address mental health and counseling needs for individual students, as well as support teachers and parents who teach and raise our wonderful students.
My goals as the School Counselor have to do with developing students' social-emotional learning skills including mindfulness, impulse control, developing positive relationships, resolving conflicts with peers, and many more. It is important for me to create a space where students feel comfortable discussing topics that may be difficult and feel like they are able to learn about themselves and grow.
My Project
Our students love to read! It can be very helpful to utilize books to teach our students not only academically, but also to grow their social emotional health as well.
I often times use books in social emotional lessons in classrooms to assist in teaching a specific therapeutic concept.
Our students enjoy listening intently to stories about children and what they are going through such as anger management, relationships, impulse control and active listening.
Along with therapeutic reading, we are in need of some mindfulness tools to use for small group and classroom instructions. These tools can be a great resources to teach skills that can be used in the classroom or at home!
