I teach middle school students (grades 6-8) who are severe-profoundly handicapped. All of my students are functionally non-verbal and most have significant physical, as well as cognitive needs. I try to give them as many experiences both in and out of the classroom as possible. Because many of my students come from low income families, the trips we take have to be limited to things that do not place financial burdens on the families. I would like my students to have the opportunity to participate in a local therapeutic horseback riding program. Besides being an experience many of them would never have otherwise, there are many benefits of the program. Children with physical disabilities often show show improved balance, movement, and relaxation. It's a great language enriching activity for children with cognitive delays and improves confidence and self-esteem for all children. I have 4 children who would participate in the program and I would like them to attend 4 sessions.
