Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a school counselor working in a Title 1 school. My students are from a low-income area, where 75% are English Language Learners and 80% receive free or reduced lunch. I serve students in grades pre-K through fifth grade.
In spite of the hardships they experience, my students are eager to learn, love to come to school, and are quick to engage in meaningful relationships with their teachers and other staff.
The social and emotional skills they will learn will help them cope with the many stressors that occur in their daily lives. My whole population of 500 students will benefit from this project.
My Project
It takes more than top grades to be a successful, happy adult. Students need to have skills for conflict resolution, advocating for themselves, staying safe, regulating their behavior and emotions, and more.
As an elementary school counselor of a Title 1 school with 76% English Language Learners, 80% free-and-reduced lunch, and 15% homeless, I know that my students can greatly benefit from social-emotional learning, in addition to their academic skills.
I believe that the best way for children to learn is through play! These therapeutic games will be used in small groups and one-on-one to help students learn life skills for success.
