Students in my building are in Pre-K - fifth grade. Our school is a Title I public school in upstate New York. Our student body is very diverse, with children coming from various backgrounds, ethnicities, experiences, and countries. Almost 97% of students in my building live below the poverty line and struggle to get their basic needs met on a daily basis. Students often enter school with little academic and social-emotional knowledge. Many also come to school having been exposed to childhood trauma, toxic stress, and mental health needs. Despite all of these barriers and challenges, our students enter the building each morning excited to be in school, energetic, and enthusiastic about learning!
My Project
All students are different. Whether it be learning styles, cognitive ability, interests, socio-economic status, environment, or life experience - no two students are the same. Many students have difficulties regulating their emotions, which can cause disruptions in the classroom and their ability to learn.
We are creating a calm down corner in the social worker's office as a confidential, safe place for students to go self-regulate.
This area will provide comfortable seating, calming and fidget tools, sensory strategies, mindfulness suggestions, an opportunity to talk about their feelings, and a place to recharge so that they can successfully return to class. Students will be able to learn what coping tools work best for them and how to improve their social-emotional skills.
