Their, There, or They're? Learning About Homophones!
My students need homophone and tricky word vocabulary games to utilize during workshop time in my classroom. My students also need various vocabulary centers that will allow for differentiation in my lessons.
Hello! I am a new fourth grade teacher at a low-income, low-performing school in North Carolina. I previously taught first grade at this school and am faced with many different challenges with this older group of students. The students at my school are a very diverse group, with a large group of ESL students. Our school has about 76% of our population receiving free or reduced lunch.
Because of our local standards, at the end of the fourth grade year, our students are required to take a writing test. This provides my students and myself with additional pressure on perfecting their writing. One problem that I have realized is that many of my ESL students have a limited vocabulary due to the lack of English at home. This becomes a problem when the students are graded on their use of appropriate vocabulary in their stories.
I am requesting several different tools that I would be able to utilize in my classroom for vocabulary review. These activities would allow my students to work in small, cooperative groups or in partners while I am working one-on-one with students who need more guided instruction. These activities review the differences in homophones, idioms, and other tricky phrases that are used in the English language.
By donating these wonderful tools to my classroom, you will help to develop the English language skills of all of my students. My students are a wonderful group of students who have not had much experience with English, other than the few hours a day that they are in school. My students would be able to utilize the new vocabulary words and create magnificent stories with proper spelling, and word usage.
Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal!
