Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Growing up, I've always found solace in books. Many of of my students do not like to read, but I'm hoping that by the end of the year, they will learn the value and impact of words. They are strong and thoughtful--their command of language should reflect that!
I teach at a low-income school in California, but my students are by no means characterized by their circumstance!
They are intelligent, witty, hilariously sarcastic, hard working, and kind. They are also the first in their families to pursue a college degree. My kids are fearless and I truly believe that they can accomplish anything they set their minds to. Since ends are often hard to meet, the last thing I want is for them to worry about school materials. I would like each one of them to have a copy of the novel so that they can continue to develop their understanding of the biography of the American Dream. Ultimately, I want their own dreams to manifest as they gain the confidence and skills necessary to achieve them!
My Project
Their Eyes Were Watching God is a story of the underdog--my students are considered by many as the underdogs. They are beyond capable, but are often limited by circumstance. Although they try to never let that define them, it's tough; not having what you need makes it tougher. This story embarks on a journey of pursuing a better life, something that my students are trying to do themselves. Children to immigrant parents, my students work extremely hard to surpass expectations and deserve more than I am able to give them. With this class set of books, they can continue their learning and hopefully walk away with more confidence!
This project will not only impact my students, but students in our school for years to come.
