This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Long before a play opens and long after the final curtain drops, student technicians are investing their time and energy. I want my students to be able to run entire performances under their own creative power. Because we lack many tools, students are missing necessary skills to achieve that goal.

Our school is located in a less affluent part of town.

Most of my students' families struggle financially. Stage Crew students do not thrive in a traditional classroom setting. They prefer to be up, active, and moving throughout class. Hands-on activities allow them to solidify concepts in their minds, making Stage Crew an ideal situation for them. Stage Crew brings together an incredibly unique group of students. They respect, support, and lift each other even when they are faced with difficult situations throughout productions. There is something about creating and problem solving together that makes students who may not seem like they would get along the best of friends.

My Project

These materials will specifically be used to give students experience in hands-on learning with building and painting. Items like the SKIL saws and the and 2" angled paint brushes are being requested to help students get off their feet and learn these new life skills! Many of the classes students take require a lot of sitting and slouching in a chair for long periods of time. My goal is to change that!

By giving students access to these hands-on tools, I hope to show students the joy of hard work and precision of craft.

There is an added level of satisfaction when students have to learn the proper safety and handling protocols of equipment before use. Learning skills such as carpentry and painting, then applying it to a project, can bring satisfaction in a relatively short amount of time! These tools provide opportunities to help students feel successful.
