My students speak multiple languages and hail from Saudi Arabia, Nepal, Bolivia, South Korea, Mexico, Germany, Guatemala and Spain, and the Crow, Blackfeet, Lakota Sioux, Navajo and Arapaho Nations. Our hobbies include: climbing trees, swimming, listening to music, drawing pictures, skiing/running/biking as fast as possible, playing pranks on parents, throwing snowballs, wrestling, reading books, playing sports, “jumping off things,” playing with dogs, playing video games, writing stories, riding horses, getting “lost in thought,” inner-tubing, building snow forts, camping, building “stuff,” fighting with siblings, and eating tasty food. 48% of these kids receive free and reduced lunch.
In short, my students are diverse, and they enjoy life.
My Project
Though we've built a powerful theater program in our school in recent years, COVID-19 knocked us flat: No crowds means no theater. And no theater means unhappy kids.
So I want to move our experience into the realm of movie-making.
The students will still act, sing, dance, wear costumes, study lines, but all of this will be created with cameras and film.
And perhaps most importantly right now, the experience will add back meaning and connection for students who in so many ways have felt lost this year.
However, technological needs related to film differ from those of live theater. To begin with, film-making depends on quality sound capture, and the first step to this challenge is obtaining microphones that carefully follow student voices. Thus, I am looking to acquire three wireless microphones.
