My students need 135 tickets to a play, interactive theater workshops before and after the play, and a week long unit arts integrated workshop to bolster their writing and social-emotional skills.
Do you remember pretending with your friends, siblings, and cousins as a child? The adventures you took, personas you donned, and places you pictured yourself in, are likely some of your fondest memories.
That's exactly what this project is about: bringing learning alive through theater.
Our students attend an urban public school with a very tight budget. Most of them live below the poverty line. Many have experienced trauma, and some, homelessness. "Extras" such as trips to see a play and participating in theater workshops, just aren't typically available for them. You can help change that! Experiences like this stick with a child and can have profound and positive impact on their future.
My Project
This project consists of a partnership between our students and a stellar group of theater educators at First Stage Children's Theater. The partnership includes a number of experiences. Theater artists engage the children in an interactive workshop prior to the play.
The experiences afforded through this project will stay with the children through their lives.
It will likewise capture their imaginations and draw them into learning. This is especially important for children experiencing trauma and homelessness, as too often we see children pull away from the world and lose hope. We want so much more them. As the children collaborate and participate in role-playing and improvisation they will also bond together and strengthen our classroom and school community. This project will benefit not just my own classroom, but spill out to include each of the 135 kindergarten through 1st grade students in our school.
