Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

In order to learn, you must teach. I teach in a poor neighborhood school in Southside Chicago, Il. It is a school which houses approximately 800 socio-economically challenged African American Students grades PK through 8th. This is my first year living in the BIG city of Chicago, and I have noticed something astouding about my eighth graders...Even though they are struggling themselves, they are always willing to help others. I have come up with a way that they can learn and teach at the same time. I would like to teach my students how to teach reading. My plan is to set up a schedule in which my students would buddy up with a Kindergarten student and tutor him or her for an hour a week. The eighth graders will make their own materials (flashcards, worksheets, writing prompts) and design their own lessons. If you choose to donate to this fund, you will be benifitting more than one class of students. The older students will accept the responsibility and grow as teenagers and the little ones will improve their reading skills.
