The Young Should Go to the de Young

The cost of a field trip to the De Young museum and Golden Gate Park is $113, including <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.

My third grade students live about four miles from the world renowned Golden Gate Park. Many rarely get there, if at all. Now, the newly rebuilt de Young Museum is an exciting place for them to visit. I would love for them to have the opportunity to go there. Since elementary is multi-subject, they would have the opportunity to see and experience a variety of things. At the entrance to the de Young is an environmental art work showing huge boulders and cracks continuing along the sidewalk -- a mini earthquake & tectonics lesson. The elevator to the top of a tower provides a 360 degree view of the park, city, ocean, and the Marin Headlands. For social studies, third graders learn about the city so the view can provide something maps can't. Inside the museum are creative, imaginative, and stimulating art sculptures and works of art. There are also collections of textiles, furniture, and other objects that will give them a historical perspective. Outside are fun sculptures such as 3 ft. tall apples and a giant safety pin over 15 feet tall. Whenever we have the opportunity to go on a field trip, they get to drive through neighborhoods they usually don't see. Many students' families don't venture outside their own neighborhood. Only two of my twenty students had been across the Golden Gate Bridge. Once in Golden Gate Park, they can see where the Japanese Tea Garden, Stow Lake, and the Music Concourse are. Hopefully, they will talk their families into going there again, and maybe they'll visit the de Young.
