I work with middle school students in the heart of Philadelphia. My students are curious, enthusiastic, and entertaining! While they sometimes try to look and act cool, when you get to know them they are such a sweet and thoughtful group of kids. They all want to learn and succeed and really are just looking to feel respected and cared for by their teacher. Some just need that extra love and support they may not get at home, which is why working with small groups is so important.
My Project
I teach math and often when students work in groups, either with other students or a small group with me, we practice a concept over and over again. Often we use individual white boards or scrap paper but with a table like this students can write directly on the table over and over again. It can then be erased before the next group comes back. It allows for writing to be larger so all members of the group can see or contribute to a solution. Being able to work together quickly and avoiding them having to gather supplies will make transitions in the classroom run quickly and smoothly.
