Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kindergarten classroom is in a rehabbed building so old that it once served as a stable! Although we have no windows and no schoolyard for our students to play in, the atmosphere is inviting and full of wonderful learning experiences. We serve a high-poverty population. All our students are eligible for free breakfast and free lunch.
Kindergarten children love to practice whatever skills they have mastered. This is especially true of writing. There is something magical that happens to a child when they first learn to write their name. They want to practice it over and over. Unfortunately, our school budget grows tighter each year. This year there was no money for writing implements. Imagine as a teacher being told that there are no funds for things as basic as developmentally- appropriate pencils and dry-erase markers (our students LOVE to practice writing with them. And they are nice and fat; just right for small, inexperienced fingers.)
My students need to have appropriate tools to do their jobs; learning to read and write. My students come from families that are simply to poor to supply these things themselves. I need an ample number of "beginner" pencils, dry-erase markers, and colored pencils to supply my writing center for a school year.
Your help in supplying the "write stuff" will ensure that my students have the "right stuff" to nurture their newly- discovered abilities.
