Fourth graders are always bursting with stories to tell! I want to help my students grow as writers through a writing workshop approach. This project will provide some of the start-up materials for writing workshop, including a captivating novel that will be used as a model for writing lessons.
The fourth graders I teach are funny, bright, caring, and enthusiastic about learning.
My school is in a suburban location, and we serve a diverse range of students with a broad range of needs and abilities. Funding this project will help develop my students as writers and show them the amazing power of words.
My Project
My fourth graders are constantly sharing stories about their weekend adventures, their families, their birthday parties, their summer vacations... they are enthusiastic storytellers, but often not as enthusiastic about writing. I want to share my passion for writing and capture their attention with an engaging novel, such as The Midnight Fox by Betsy Byars, to use as a "mentor text" for writing lessons. I will also set up a writing workshop format with the requested materials, utilizing writing binders/ portfolios. Students will be able to develop their craft as writers by keeping a writer's notebook, and the Ralph Fletcher books will be used as a student resource for writing lessons. My goal is to help my students grow into confident, independent, motivated writers, and these materials will help me get started on that task.
This project will allow me to show students how powerful good writing can be and help them see that they, too, are capable writers.
I want my students to create writing they are proud to share and be excited about their work. By funding this project, you will help give my students a "voice" in their writing and show them that they have the power to make even an ordinary story extraordinary.
