Kindergarten kicks off a life of learning. It's the first place where students learn how to maneuver the difference between solving little problems, so they won't become big problems. And the place that they discover the magic of sounds becoming words and words becoming sentences and then Viola--they can read and write!
Opening up a Kinders' mind to the magic of writing--through expressing their thoughts and releasing their imagination--is a Kinder Wonderland.
Wow, look what I did! Let me read this to you!
My students come from shelters, upscale homes, families with doctorates and families that have trouble affording doctors. But they all a like. Give them the resources and watch how resourceful they are.
My Project
I recently attended a week-long class at Columbia University's Teachers College on how to teach writing. It was mind-blowing. I realized how much I needed to step up to turn my kindergartners into "Authors".
It's so important for every child to find their voice as a writer, no matter what age.
Starting a five year old off on the love of writing is one of the best gifts I can give my students.
Every item I am requesting will be dedicated to a writing center. It will be filled with choice and supplies, like markers and bins for them to pick what they want and start doodling and exploring and writing.
The bins will help me organize the different types of writing paper, so students can move to paper without lines all the way up to multi-lined paper. The teaching cart, along with chart, will help me teach my mini-lessons in a way the kids can see and understand. Plus, it will provide more interaction and a meaningful center for students to use, once the mini-lesson is complete. The students will learn to self-correct and edit their work through the use of post-it notes. That will be such a game changer for them. Loving to change their writing, instead of dreading it! All the supplies will be used every day, in ways the kids can go and grow.
