My students need 4 backdrops and stands to serve as makeshift wings on stage, portable closets for moving costumes from class to stage, and books to start our classroom library.
Theatre is part history, psychology, technology, team building and thinking on your feet... all rolled into one class! Our theatre class is made up of grades 7-12, and this wide range of ages will be learning how to work together as a group, 'read' each other better, have patience, be more understanding, overcome fears, and to communicate thoughts, ideas and emotions, both verbally and physically.
My classes focus on respect, teamwork and learning about the world and how to navigate it.
Theatre is such a great education, even for those who will not pursue it after school. We have such great discussions about a wide range of subjects, from emotions and thoughts, to current events, how to handle rejection, peer pressure, parental/self pressure, and so much more. Education today has left students prepared to crunch numbers and write a proper thesis, but they seem barely able to work together and think outside the box, or to think for themsleves and solve minor problems.
I adore my students! I set a high standard in class and they routinely surpass my expectations!
My Project
This is a first year Theatre Arts class and we are hoping the class can continue and build on the solid foundation we are establishing. Our school does not have a proper stage, therefore the photo backdrop stands and muslins, will serve as "wings" for our end of year productions. For you non-theatre folks, wings are where performers excitedly (or nervously) wait to enter and exit the stage.
Budgets for the arts are thin to none, and our school is actually trying to incorporate MORE arts - BRAVO!!
We are also trying to build an in-class library for students, the books listed here are just a few of the books I would like to acquire for the class. I have brought in several of my books and plays from home, but the more the merrier.
The portable closets will live in the classroom most of the year, but come dress rehearsal and production time, we would love to have something that can easily move, and stay enclosed, so as to keep the mystery of theatre alive! No peeking!
