Our students chose to enter an early college, where students earn both a high school diploma and an associates degree in four years. We choose them to reflect the diversity of our large city, which means they come from a range of middle schools and socioeconomic backgrounds.
No matter their background, our students are curious, quirky, thoughtful, and dedicated.
Above all, they are committed to doing the extraordinary amount of independent reading, writing, and thinking demanded by an early college.
My Project
Photography is a wonderful tool that allows you to explore the world around you. Our hands-on digital photography class provides students with the basic tools of photography with an emphasis on technical skills as well as creative and conceptual approaches. Using these cameras, students will learn the basic functions of a camera, including shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. Referencing historical and contemporary photographers as case studies, students will be exposed to a diverse range of voices and perspectives. However, to do all of this, students will need cameras!
These cameras will allow our students to learn the value of looking at themselves, their immediate surroundings, and the world at large.
They will create work that reflects their identities, their communities, and their peers. While many students are interested in digital photography, not having access to cameras serves as a barrier to taking this course. These cameras will ensure that every student in our diverse school has the opportunity to learn and grow as an artist.
The library is partnering with the digital photography classes to make cameras available to those who want to learn but otherwise could not.
