My students need new books to expand their reading life! We are looking to add more diverse books to our class library in terms of authors, characters, and genres.
Being a kid isn't easy. There's schoolwork, friends, parents, you name it. With all of the pressure that is placed on you, sometimes life can be difficult to navigate. That's where my favorite fruit comes in.
"Be like a pineapple: Stand tall, wear a crown, and be sweet on the inside." This saying hangs in a predominant location in my classroom and serves as our class motto.
It's important to believe in yourself. No matter what life throws at you, working hard will help you succeed. My students are learning that during their first year as "middle schoolers" in our kindergarten through eighth grade school district. Upon entering fifth grade, they are responsible for managing lockers, arriving to classes on time, working with several teachers instead of just one, and staying organized. It can be quite a challenge!
Despite this, the children at our school rise to the occasion. In fact, it's not uncommon to hear them say how much they love switching classes and having a bit of extra freedom. Still, there are times when a high five, big hug, or words of compassion mean more than anything. My classroom is a safe environment where every person is valued.
My Project
I want my students to be able to see themselves in the characters that they read about; I also want them to explore different types of books. This project will help accomplish just that and your help could bring it to life.
Not every kid is the same which means not every book should look the same either!
The books listed in this project are written by diverse authors and highlight characters that are not typically of the norm. If we want children to learn about empathy, acceptance, and kindness, they need to see that in the books that they read.
