Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are courageous, fighters, and ambitious. Regardless of the challenges and barriers they face coming from an urban community and attending an underfunded school, they continue to aspire and achieve their future goals. The majority of our students are first-generation college-bound students coming from low-income households. My students come from different ethnic and racial groups.
A large population of our students not only balance academics and extracurricular activities but also after-school jobs.
Several of our students have to contribute financially to help their parents. As a college adviser, I have personally been able to build mentor to student relationships that have allowed me to become knowledgeable of the diverse population I serve. I have witnessed students being in the foster care system and facing homelessness. Decision Day is an important event on our campus because it shows the underclassmen that they can accomplish their college goals just as the seniors. Several of our students have been accepted to top universities such as Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Irvine, Cal State Long Beach, San Jose State University, and others. I know they will accomplish great things and give back to their community in the future.
My Project
Students will be able to break their own barriers. They are unable to afford the basic necessities to become successful scholars in college. It has been proven through research that not accounting with the basic necessities such as technology affects the outcomes of students in low-income neighborhoods. The majority of our students come from backgrounds that do not account with the basic resources to excel academically. In order to improve the retention of our students in college campuses, we plan to donate laptops to college-bound students. These items will help them complete their assignments, projects, and achieve their ultimate goal of becoming successful college graduates.
