My students are between the ages of 3 and 5. They are energetic, adventurous and curious. Their joy is genuine and their laughter is contagious. They are at a precious and very critical age. Their experience in preschool will impact how they feel about school for the rest of their lives.
I work for a program in which 90% of the families we service are from low-income households and many have been exposed to some form of childhood trauma.
We know through research that these early years are the most crucial years for brain development and learning. This is why It is so important to me to provide my students with fun and engaging learning experiences that will help build and strengthen both cognitive and social-emotional skills.
My Project
The materials that I have requested will be used to help my children explore the world and the many different cultures and dynamics that it is made up of.
Children are not born knowing love and hate, these are learned behaviors.
In my room we choose to teach love. With love, we learn about acceptance and inclusion. We celebrate each others differences and respect each others beliefs, traditions and family dynamic. The materials that I have requested will allow my children to learn more about cultures and homes of other children. The materials will also help break gender and racial stereotypes.
The baby dolls will be a wonderful addition to the classroom because they represent several different races. This will allow each child to see that they are being represented, no matter what the color of their skin is. I also am looking forward to all of the doll accessories. So often we hear parents say, my son cannot play with dolls, but in my classroom they are encouraged to. The boys can play with dolls and change the clothes and give them bottles. This shows that a father is just as important as a mother. And, for those students that do not have a father in their home, it helps teach them the roles of a father.
Please help me give my students materials to help build self awareness and cultural awareness and break gender and racial stereotyping.
