Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
P.S. 154X is a dynamic school that strives to foster a love of reading and learning within each student through activities such as themed monthly read alouds and countless school-wide celebrations. Recently, we have adopted the Readers' Workshop model in our school: Students are assessed individually, given their appropriate independent reading level. Knowing their individual reading levels and then providing them with level-appropriate books ensures that each child develops true comprehension, fluency, and critical thinking at their own pace. Gradually, each student becomes a better reader and is able to move on to more difficult texts.
As a 4th/5th Grade classroom teacher for the past three years, I have discovered that students' interest level in certain topics and/or materials is an extremely important resource as we seek to develop their critical thinking and analysis skills. As facilitators of knowledge, it is our duty to become informed about what interests our students and thus provide them with materials that inform that curiosity. Science, in particular, is a subject that many students show interest in from a very early age. Elementary school students are intrigued by our natural world. Unfortunately, we are lacking in materials to help quench that thirst for knowledge.
The "iOpeners" science libraries from Pearson Learning Group would greatly benefit my classroom this coming school year. The nonfiction books are leveled (as are our students through individual assessment). Students would be able to select science nonfiction texts that are appropriate for their reading level, meaning that their enjoyment of the text would be complimented with skill development. It essentially promises to be the perfect combination of learning and enjoyment!
The books would be added to our classroom library to be used for both independent and guided reading. Students will also use the books to write journal responses, develop book projects, book reports, reviews, and skits/plays to present and share with the rest of the class. The books will also be used during my read alouds during which time I model good reading behaviors and use strategies specific to the genre. They will then be able to turn to their own historical fiction reading and try that same behavior or strategy.
Your donation will assist me in providing my students with quality science reading materials which we currently lack in our library.
