The World in Spacial Terms

Help me give my students access to the materials they need by supplying our classroom with raised topography globes! Due to budget cuts to our educational system, I did not receive a classroom budget this year.

My Students

My students are a group of lovely, funny, kind, and rambunctious 7th grade kids who LOVE being outside. We live in Glenwood Springs, Colorado which is right on the Colorado River and we love to walk to down to the river and play in the water and watch the rafters go by.

We are a small, rural community school that draws its students from several surrounding communities.

These communities differ vastly in socio-economic resources, and we strive to provide every child, regardless of these resources, the quality education they deserve. We are a diverse school, with many of our kids coming to us with Spanish as their native language.

My Project

These globes will be used to teach kids about geography concepts, including but not limited to: latitude and longitude, biomes, topography, and political, regional, and cultural boundaries.

Last year, it became apparent to me that simply looking at maps does not help kids picture the vast wonders of our planet.

Having globes helps kids picture our planet's order in the cosmos in relation to other celestial bodies, and helps them place themselves within the larger context of global citizenship. It also helps immensely with showing them the correct size of continents, countries, and oceans. Having access to globes drives home the reality that regardless of where we are born, we are all connected through our home, planet earth.
