Mrs. Morris from Montrose CO is requesting Computers & Tablets through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students Chromebooks to explore their world and share what they learn with others.
I teach a special group of students, who are inquisitive and creative. These 6th through 8th grade severe needs students are always asking questions. These students love exploring their world through scientific inquiry. They have explored a number of topics; slime, the human body, and biogas being just a few.
These students have struggles, but they refuse to be defined by their special needs, they are embracing their strengths.
I want to be able to provide my students with the tools they need to explore the world around them. Even though these students have special needs, they still enjoy learning and when they reach those "Ah, ha!" moments it is really rewarding.
When it comes to doing research, nothing beats a computer. My students have come to realize that it can be fun to do research. They like going to the library but it is hard for them to sit at the desktop computers for any length of time. I am fortunate to be able to borrow Chromebooks from other teachers, which allows my students to work in the classroom.
It would be great if my students could have access to computers at any time.
My students enjoy creating presentations of what they are learning. We have found that it is easier to do this on a Chromebook then on an iPad. Having a keyboard makes it easier for my students to navigate online, create presentation slide shows, or to share something in Google Classroom.
I also have a few students who are non-verbal and being able to share their thoughts through a media format gives them a sense of being part of the group. I had one student who was non-verbal but he could express himself by typing what he wanted. The iPad frustrated him but a regular sized key board was easier for him to use.
Access to information, having a computer when inspiration strikes and the ability to communicate are just a couple of the reasons that my students would benefit from having their own Chromebooks in the classroom.
