I teach a self-contained special education preschool program for students with disabilities at a public Title I school. My students range in age from 3 to 5 years old with varying disabilities and cognitive abilities. My class is made up of children on the autism spectrum and other cognitive and physical disabilities. The majority of my students are unable to participate in learning activities that require using a mouse.
My focus is on providing my students with the same experiences as others and making learning fun!
My students have short attention spans and physical impairments that require prompting to engage in tasks. We work to provide exciting activities to encourage our students to show their strengths. I follow the general education curriculum but modify it to meet my students' needs. Research has proven that learning through play is best and my students prove that this is true!
My Project
Most of my students are not able to use a mouse because of their limited fine motor skills. By using the touchscreen monitor, they will be given the opportunity to participate and learn through educational games and interactive learning websites. Students with disabilities benefit from interactive and multi-sensory modes of instruction. Technology allows students to learn in a deeper and more immediate way. It allows me to make lessons more diverse and interesting to maintain their focus.
I am excited to empower my students so they may participate in activities with peers and be successful.
I feel that the touchscreen monitor and accessories will encourage and excite my students while giving us an opportunity to be involved. Technology plays an important role in our lives, and by giving the students these powerful tools, we are helping them prepare for their life outside of my classroom.
