Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My fifth grade students need to feel that their ideas are valued and that they are an important part of our classroom community. They continue to have many of the same interests as they did when they were younger, but they are also looking ahead to their teenage years. This is the beginning of an especially vulnerable time in their youth, and a time when they are looking for a reaffirmation of who they are and their importance in the world.
Most of the students in my class speak a primary home language other than English.
When they come to my classroom, they are hungry for knowledge and love to learn about and discuss what is happening around the world. I encourage them to find their own voices and opinions about what they see in their community and in the world.
My fifth graders also love collaborating and teaching each other, as well as teaching younger students. Together, we create a collaborative learning environment in our classroom, and the students take on many leadership roles in our class and beyond.
My Project
An important part of our daily routine is our restorative circle time. This helps to set a positive tone for our day, as well as giving all students a chance to share both their concerns and the events they are happily anticipating. Our restorative circle also gives my students the chance to solve problems and to strengthen our classroom community. When we are meeting, we sit on the classroom floor in a circle.
The world rug will provide my students with a special meeting place.
This will remind them of the importance of this special time in our day. In my school district, all primary classrooms are outfitted with a meeting time rug. The world rug will allow us to have a nice place to meet but will make it feel like a space for older children.
My students also LOVE looking at maps. The world rug will give them the chance to really explore the different parts of the world, especially as we learn about the routes taken by the explorers, part of our Fifth Grade curriculum.
