Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Ever wonder why things happen the way they do? My students do all the time. They have many questions about the world around them and how it works. Today they can learn about the processes in nature through scientific inquiry. Technology is the bridge to get them there.
My students are full of many questions and are constantly asking me how things work.
My challenge is to engage them in the scientific process so they can begin to answer their own questions. Our school is made up of a diversity students and needs. We are a Title 1 school with students coming from many socioeconomic backgrounds. In my classroom, the students range from Far Below Basic to Advanced in both English Language Arts and Math. Our ELL population is about 42%. My students enjoy working with technology and hands-on science experiments. They collaborate with one another on many levels through flexible groups, pair-share, and collaborative projects. It is important for my students to learn how to work together as we continue into the 21st Century learning model. Engaging my students in the scientific method to help them understand why things happen in the world around them is a critical part of their education.
My Project
I find my students often times have a difficult time beginning a project. They ponder what topic to choose. With the iPad, students can pair up and take it mobile. They can make observations all around school and record them on the iPad. I believe that if you give students a camera, they will come alive with ideas. The students will record their observations which will be the basis for their scientific investigation. They will now have a visual representation of their project, and can now move to the next steps in the scientific process. With the Apple TV, they can share their projects with the rest of the class. The students video projects will help illustrate their mastery of the 5th grade science standards. This is critical especially in 5th grade where science is tested on the California Standardized Test.
Developing a strong understanding of how to use the scientific method is critical in helping students comprehend the world around them.
By using the iPad and Apple TV as a tool to pique their interests into scientific inquiry would be a great contribution in my classroom. I see science and technology working together as an essential part of my classroom's future.
