Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many students might see themselves as writers. How many of them, however, actually consider themselves to be true authors? Through the great experience of bookmaking, inside and out, I believe my students will be able to take pride in the fact that they are indeed authentic authors.
My students are enthusiastic learners.
They are creative children but need extra experiences, opportunities, and resources to enable them to reach their maximum potential. They have great sense of humor and find joy in learning. I don't only want to nurture this joy, I also want to validate it.
We are a public school in California with over 600 students enrolled in Pre-K through 6th grade. Our school qualifies for the federal lunch program allowing all students to receive free breakfast and lunch. About 90% of our students qualify for Title I funding. Approximately 94% of our students are Hispanic or Latino. 100% of our student population deserves the best education, learning experiences, and resources we can offer.
My Project
Many students need motivation to write. Creating their own beautifully bound books will be just the incentive my students need. Being able to bind their own written work will not only be motivating and rewarding, I believe it will help them to develop a true love of writing.
A binding machine and accessories will take publishing to a whole new level. The stampers and colored pencils will be used to create borders and illustrations to further enhance their book. With these resources, my students will be able to make individual books and will also contribute to collaborative class books. Through bookmaking, they will feel a great sense of pride and ownership.
Students love to read books that were created by their classmates. These bound books will undoubtedly become favorite reading selections. Therefore, through these bound books, my students will also improve their reading skills.
Making books brings creativity and curriculum together.
Having a deeper understanding of how books are made will lead my students to have a greater appreciation for them.
The bound books created will be shared with their classmates, different grade levels, friends, and families. Therefore, the impact of the student created books will reach far beyond our classroom walls.
Through the experiences of the writing process, publishing, and book binding, my students will discover that they are not only writers but also celebrated authors.
