Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I carefully read every book, article and story that I share with my 6th grade English students, and I have rejected many books that are available to me but, for whatever reason, are not exactly what I am seeking in order to provide a language-rich, consciousness-raising and culturally proficient experience to my students.
Recently I discovered Ira Peck's The Life and Words of Martin Luther King, Jr., a concise volume that has been reprinted by Scholastic numerous times. This book contains clear and accurate historical reporting, extensive quotations from Dr. King, and a total of 52 black and white photographs that chronicle his work in the civil rights movement. And while it tackles intellectually challenging content, it is written at a reading level and in a narrative style that is highly accessible to the English Language Learner population at my school. From the moment I picked up the book myself, I wanted it for my 6th grade students. It is simply the clearest, most comprehensive and most accessible source for knowledge about Martin Luther King, Jr. that I have encountered.
I have attempted, unsuccessfully, to order a class set of this book using school funds. I nearly bought a set with my own money, but decided that I have already spent more than enough money this year on my classroom.
If you choose to fund this valuable resource for my school and me, you can be assured that it will be used to enrich an integrated curriculum that emphasizes tolerance, community and diversity and that it will be shared with other 6th grade teachers and students.
