Our school is unique because it pulls students from both a rural part of town and from the more affluent suburban homes. My middle school students range from ages eleven to fourteen. Over 40% of our students fall into the low-socioeconomic range. When our students walk into the building they notice vibrant hallways and with quotes to inspire their day.
My students love to bring learning into their own hands.
In the makerspace and library, my students crave hands-on, project based learning activities. When children have a desire to read a particular kind of book, we must foster and support that love!
Many of our students had parents or even grandparents that attended our school. While all of the other local schools are undergoing facelifts and construction, our school has not changed since it was built in 1940. It is a special place that feels like a home filled with family.
My Project
Right now, our students are in need of a variety of approaches in order to sharpen their reading skills and explore the world of coding. In our makerspace, our students can combine coding with other subject areas in order to heighten the importance and understanding of major content.
With Ozobots, my students can code timelines, restructure the plot diagram of a story, or even bring life to what they are learning in class.
Ozobots will help them "follow the yellow brick road" of makerspaces.
Coding objects to move provides real-world feedback to the students as they create their code. Coding can be a difficult adventure for students who struggle to see the outcome of their efforts. With Ozobots, that challenge is eliminated. Students can see how their code changes the behavior of their robot. Additionally, our students will create and run an Ozobot station during this year's school maker fair. Bringing Ozobots into the classroom is an amazing opportunity for our "wizards" to take computer science out of the computer and into the real world!
