As a fifth grade teacher, my goal is to provide hands-on learning opportunities for my students. I find that this is especially important in the area of science. This upcoming school year, my students will serve as scientists as they uncover the wonder and mystery of our earth's weather system. Part of their study will require them to gain a deeper understanding of the water cycle. I have found that my students often have a tough time "visualizing" this cycle because it is difficult to demonstrate it in its entirety. I have identified two resources that will be essential in my goal to help deepen student understanding of this complex process. These resources provide opportunities for students to engage in the learning process and complete experiments that would demonstrate the water cycle and its function for our earth's system. A water cycle model allows students to see the water cycle in action. Through investigation and observation, students will be able to watch all steps in the cycle occur firsthand. An additional resource, the "Science in a Nutshell" class pack, would allow all students the chance to perform experiments involving the water cycle. By obtaining these resources, I would be able to provide my student-scientists with meaningful, engaging instruction. These hands-on resources would enable them to become active participants in the learning process.
