Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is a 3rd grade dual language (English-Mandarin) class of about 22 students in District 1 in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City. Most of my students come from low-income families and my school is a Title I school. Many of them receive free lunches based on their socioeconomic status.
Despite the many challenges they face, such as little food at home, my students are always so smiley, kind, thoughtful, and so generous.
They will save their snacks and surprise me by leaving snacks such as an apple, a banana, or a pack of cranberries on my desk! Their words, "You need brain food!" makes my heart melt! They are intelligent, fun loving, creative, and spontaneous.
I am looking to provide my students with hands-on, fun, and meaningful learning experiences. I need your help to make that possible.
My Project
I am a firm believer of experiential learning in that kids learn best through reflection on doing and having fun. After learning about Wonder Workshop's two interactive robots (Dash and Dot) at a Computer Science PD, I decided to create this STEM project.
It will be really wonderful if my students can have access to these Dot and Dash Robot Wonder and STEM Creativity Packs to learn about coding, programming and robotics.
I plan to have my students work collaboratively on these Dot and Dash projects to program these robots to do things such as having the robot compose and play a tune or catapult balls through its launching device. Students can also work together to create their own games and robot behaviors for Dash and Dot.
I also like it that Dash and Dot can be used with different apps such as Xylo, Path, Go, Blockly and Wonder depending on the computer skills of my students.
I'm hoping my students will have fun as well as learn events, conditionals, and other coding principles through these projects and puzzles.
Many thanks for your consideration in helping us with this project!
